Interstate War Battle Dataset (IWBD)

The Interstate War Battle Dataset (IWBD) contains information on the dates, participants, and outcomes of 1,708 battles that took place over 97 interstate wars between 1823 and 2003. The IWBD may prove useful in studies of intra-conflict dynamics and allows for a study of war that goes beyond treating entire conflicts as a unit of analysis.

The IWBD is current in its first iteration. I plan to add additional information on more features of these battles, as well as making any necessary updates to improve the accuracy, quality, and comprehensiveness of this resource over time.

Autocracies of the World Data

The Autocracies of the World (AoW) dataset is an attempt to categorize all governments of the world from 1950 to 2012. In doing so, we hope that the AoW dataset provides new innovations that can promote academic and policy-based understanding of autocratic rule. A couple examples include new measures of personalism within all autocracies and data on regime duration. These additions, along with all technical descriptions and comparisons with other regimes datasets, are outlined in the codebook.

We ask that the dataset be cited in the following manner: Magaloni, Beatriz, Jonathan Chu, and Eric Min. 2013. Autocracies of the World, 1950-2012 (Version 1.0). Dataset, Stanford University.

Both the dataset and codebook are housed at the Center for Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford University, at this link. They are also directly available below.
